Motorists are asked to anticipate intermittent one-hour closures on the Icefields Parkway on Monday due to avalanche control work.

The one-hour closures are expected to occur between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. on a 20-kilometre section of the highway from Parker Ridge to Sunset Pass Trailhead in Banff National Park.

All other sections of the Icefields Parkway will remain open.

Parks Canada said a winter storm is anticipated to hit Jasper National Park starting Saturday.

The storm is forecasted to bring high winds and upwards of 20 centimetres of snow by Sunday, which will increase the avalanche hazard and may require avalanche control work.

“Parks Canada only closes roads when absolutely necessary, when weather, road or avalanche conditions present a risk to human life,” Parks Canada stated.

“When roads are closed, gates are locked for the safety of park visitors and motorists. Breaking gates or intruding into avalanche control areas is unsafe and illegal.”

Check 511 Alberta for road conditions and traffic information.

Backcountry users should check avalanche.ca for updated conditions.
