Parks Canada took the Fitzhugh on a helicopter tour of Jasper National Park to get a better sense of the wildfire destruction.

Old Fort Point reopened on Friday (Sept. 28) after the Jasper wildfire scorched the surrounding landscape.

The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation in Central Alberta says 29 immature migratory hawks have been taken in throughout the province since the beginning of July.

Parks Canada says the fire impacted a minimal amount of caribou habitat, but most vegetation at the breeding centre sustained varying levels of damage.

The wildfire caused extensive damage to all four outlying accommodations south of the Jasper townsite and completely destroyed Jasper House Bungalows.

Glaciers should reflect roughly 30 per cent of solar radiation, but in recent years, the Athabasca Glacier has been reflecting only 15 per cent.

“Where is that pressure coming from? Is it based on science, is it based on conflict rates increasing, or is it just based on a minister that wants to shoot grizzly bears?”

The bears had also broken into a yard when people were around, and a storage shed containing food.

“The concept area will have to be reviewed in person in joint consultation with Parks Canada’s fire vegetation management team to determine the most effective locations for the fireguard,” said Banff fire chief Keri Martens.
