The Alberta government has removed furbearer trapping limits for the 2024-25 season in most zones, including for at-risk wolverines.

While the Jasper fire is classified as under control, Parks Canada won’t be able to declare the blaze extinguished until it can do a final scan at the start of next wildfire season and look at some perimeter areas where deeper fuel pockets are located.

More than 150 stakeholders and Indigenous community members recently provided input, and the online survey is open to the public until Nov. 7.

“We’ve encouraged and we’ve incentivized, but the fact remains that like Jasper, like Fort McMurray, it’s not the big wall of flames that comes and wipes out your community, it is embers raining in and igniting structures."

The Alberta government is proposing additional restrictions on wind and solar farms that conservationists think are more about limiting renewable energy than protecting the environment.

Maligne Road reopened in Jasper National Park on Friday (Oct. 11) at 8 a.m. The road provides access to attractions such as Medicine Lake and Maligne Lake. Maligne Lookout is open, but Maligne Canyon remains closed for the time being.

A dazzling display of northern lights is expected to return for a repeat performance Oct. 10. This time it might be even better.

"We haven't confirmed yet that there were fire tornadoes that occurred in Jasper, but it's a very strong possibility."
