A motorcyclist suffered critical injuries from a motor vehicle collision on Highway 16 five kilometres west of Jasper on June 8.

At 10:57 a.m., Parks Canada informed the RCMP about the collision that impeded traffic along the highway for most of the day.

According to preliminary investigation, the motorcycle was travelling eastbound on Highway 16 and for unknown reasons went into the lane of oncoming traffic and collided with a van travelling westbound.

The motorcyclist was taken by emergency medical services for treatment. STARS was requested but had to be diverted due to weather.

The motorcyclist was in critical condition and remains in hospital at this time but is believed to be in stable condition now.

The driver of the van was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries before being released.

Jasper RCMP thanked Parks Canada, the Jasper Fire Department, Jasper EMS, STARS and the members of the public who provided assistance at the scene.

Jasper RCMP, along with the RCMP Collision Reconstructionist’s assistance, are investigating the cause of this collision.

Editor's note: The collision occurred west, not east, of Jasper. The time should also read a.m. rather than p.m.
