LAKE LOUISE – Twenty commercial vehicles were put out of service during a Lake Louise RCMP-led operation in mid-May.

From May 15-17, Lake Louise RCMP, with assistance from Banff RCMP, Alberta RCMP Traffic, Alberta Sheriffs, Alberta Transportation, and Parks Canada, inspected commercial vehicles operating in the Lake Louise area.

More than 70 commercial vehicles were inspected, with 20 commercial vehicles put out of service and 12 commercial vehicles identified as “requiring immediate attention”.

Police issued 31 tickets and handed out 19 warnings. Of the 70 commercial vehicles inspected, 38 passed inspections.

Alberta Sheriffs provided several officers to assist with this operation, including specially trained commercial vehicle inspectors.

RCMP say the purpose of this operation was to inspect commercial vehicles to ensure they were in safe working order and in compliance with all provincial and federal legislation.

Sgt. Susan Richter, detachment commander of Lake Louise RCMP, said traffic safety is a priority for Lake Louise RCMP.

“In this operation, we aimed to enhance public safety by focusing on three things – safe vehicles, safe drivers, and safe roads,” she said in a media release.

"This initiative was one way we have used education and enforcement to ensure our roadways are safe for everyone using them.”
