Letter: Smith owes apology over measles outbreak in Alberta

letter-to-the-editor

Dear Fitzhugh editor,

In regards to the Jasper Fire Report and the demands for an apology by Premier Danielle Smith, I think that both the people of Jasper and the people of Alberta are also owed an apology by Danielle Smith.

During the recent COVID epidemic, Smith was a noted public friend and representative of anti-vaxxer elements in Alberta, who to this day remain a major part of her political support base.

We shouldn't forget Smith's totally ludicrous claims three years ago, when she announced her intention to amend the Alberta Human Rights Act to add vaccination status as grounds subject to protection from discrimination.

Smith actually called individuals who chose not to get vaccinated against COVID 'the most discriminated-against group that I've ever witnessed in my lifetime".

The results of Smith's policies are now apparent in the new measles epidemic. Alberta, with a population of 5,000,000, now has more measles cases (over 1,300) than the rest of Canada and the entire USA (over 1,200) with population 370,000,00.

In 1998, measles was declared eradicated in Canada, but thanks to Smith and her Alberta anti-vaxxer support base, it has now come roaring back. So far, no Alberta children have died like some in Texas, but it's a serious possibly.

If ever an apology was owed for gross mismanagement and conspiracy theory disinformation, it's owed by Danielle Smith.

Thanks,

Paul Brooke,

North Vancouver
