Early season shred

Marmot Basin marked its 50th opening with a snowy day of lower mountain magic. On time for first chair, two lifts were open and six runs were groomed and ready to rock: School House, Bunny Hop, Old Road, Tranquilizer, Slow Poke and Sleepy Hollow.

Groovin' family style

Jasper’s latest family dance was a high-energy affair, with costumed kiddies tearing up the dance floor with their parents. Around 200 people filled the Activity Centre, Nov. 22.

Jasper Midget Bearcats are back

It’s been a whole season since Jasper had Midget level hockey, and this years’ team is back with four wins and one tie so far. The team has travelled to Athabasca, Whitecourt and Hinton and hosted Edson and Hinton at home.

Less than two minutes into last Saturday’s game against the Edson Canadians, Jasper Atom Bears goaltender, Aiden Deagle had a moment he’d sooner forget. A thin puck shot from centre slid under his stick and dribbled into the net.

Caribou decline as reindeer thrive in Scotland

M. Bradley photo Jasper’s caribou herds are declining in size. Last month, Parks Canada employees did their annual count of the four herds that call the park home and found that, once again, there are fewer caribou than last year.

Seven eager toe-tappers put on their dancing shoes and learned the tango, Nov. 12. The evening of leg shaking was part of the Jasper Adult Learning Centre’s month of free partner dance lessons, taught by Chad Krayenhoff.
