I may be mistaken, but I believe these observations reflect the feelings for many of us at this time of year.
We shed the winter’s cold and white, we are back to a lush green and bright colours, we even get the celestial light shows of rainbows, thunder and lightning. Jasper Friends of the Library Society invites you to indulge even more in a spa full of colours and fragrances, designs and creativity in their annual Secret Garden Tour through five Jasper backyards on Saturday, July 20 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. You might get inspired with ideas for your own backyard and garden and even discover here and there extra surprises. Come to the library to purchase tickets for $20 per adult or $30 per group (two or more people). Cash only.
On June 26, we celebrated in our library the book launch of Paulette Dubé’s new book “Naked Pictures.” Paulette is a local poet, former teacher and storyteller par excellence. So, the audience was in for a treat. Her book idea started when COVID was grinding our social life to a halt and when she discovered that our social structures were not as strong as thought. Paulette renewed her relationship to nature, took photos of the wilderness around her and reflected on them in poems. This poetic field-photo journal is offered as homage to a renewed relationship with the land. Niki Wilson, a well-known local science writer, interviewed Paulette on the genesis of this book at the launch. What followed was a lively, humorous conversation à la CBC’s “Writers and Company” with a full house hanging on their every word. The evening was rounded out by delicious homemade snacks and beverages.
The summer months bring lots of leisure time for our children. Keep their imaginations soaring and fill their hours with a good book. This habit cannot be started too early in life and we invite children to join the TD Summer Reading Club. Children from pre-readers to age 12 can sign up at the library and collect their reading club package anytime! This year's theme is To the Stars with a Drop-in program every Monday from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. inside or outside (weather permitting) the library, starting on July 8, 2024. With the reading club pack, children can also take the club activities on their holiday trip elsewhere in Canada as there is a webpage code included which unlocks the children’s own reading pages on the Summer Reading Club website as well as Audiobook and e-book options available.
