Jasper RCMP have arrested a suspect who had allegedly been driving around in a stolen vehicle and fled from police.
On July 11, Jasper RCMP conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle at around 2:45 p.m. on Snaring Road, about one kilometre off Highway 16.
A query of the license plate showed that the license plate did not match the vehicle.
When the officer exited the police vehicle, the suspect’s vehicle fled from police.
It was not pursued for public safety reasons.
A search of the area showed that the suspect vehicle had rammed through a locked and secured CN access road gate located on Snaring Road.
Later around 8 p.m., CN personnel in a passing train found the vehicle abandoned east of Snaring Road along the CN Railway.
Jasper RCMP determined the vehicle had been stolen out of Edmonton.
Andrew Silver Brietzke (32) of Athabasca County, who was in the area of the stolen vehicle, was arrested on outstanding warrants.
Upon further investigation, Brietzke was charged with the following:
- Flight from police
- Possession of stolen property under $5,000 (x2)
- Mischief under $5,000
- Fail to comply with release conditions
- Enter land where line of works is situated (Railway Safety Act)
Following a judicial hearing, Brietzke was remanded into custody with his next judicial appearance scheduled for July 14.
