Four people are in quarantine at Jasper Park Lodge.

The four, all Fairmont employees, have gone into self-isolation in staff accommodations as a precautionary measure while awaiting test results for COVID-19 (coronavirus).

They were tested for the virus based on recent travel history. It was not confirmed where they had travelled or when they returned.

"The hotel and employees are following the guidance of local public health authorities, Alberta Health Services," a Fairmont spokeswoman said in an email.

"Alberta Health Service has tested the four employees and at this time, have advised that the risk level is very low as the individuals are not showing any usual symptoms of coronavirus."

She added that Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s first priority is the safety and wellbeing of their employees and guests.

In Alberta, the coronavirus risk level remains low, despite the province's first probable case of COVID-19 being reported March 5.

Out of those tested in the province, 371 have resulted in negatives and two have tested positive.

COVID-19 is believed to be spread mainly by coughing, sneezing or direct contact with someone who is sick with COVID-19 or with surfaces they have recently touched.

If you were in a hospital where COVID-19 cases were diagnosed or treated:

  • Monitor yourself daily for 14 days after leaving the area for symptoms like fever, cough or shortness of breath
  • At the first sign of symptoms, immediately self-isolate and call Health Link 811

Isolation vs quarantine

Isolation and quarantine are public health practices used to stop or limit the spread of disease.

Quarantine is used to separate and restrict the movement of well people who may have been exposed to a communicable disease to see if they become ill. These people may have been exposed to a disease and do not know it, or they may have the disease but do not show symptoms. Quarantine can also help limit the spread of communicable disease.

Isolation is used to separate ill people who have a communicable disease from healthy people. Isolation restricts the movement of ill people to help stop the spread of diseases.
