OUT Jasper raised the flags once again in support of International day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
Rain or shine on May 17, OUT Jasper and the Jasper Pride community gathered in front of the town’s firehall to show solidarity with others in LGBTQ+ communities.
“Today, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia aims to co-ordinate international events that raise awareness of the LGBTQAS2+ rights violations,” said Mychol Ormandy, executive director of OUT Jasper.
Ormandy said unfortunately these violations still happen daily.
“It’s now more than ever, important for us as human beings to come together and support each other, listen to each other and acknowledge each other, both for our differences and for our similarities.”
“We, OUT Jasper, Jasper Pride and the entire community, have always been consistent in our support for all human rights and especially those in the LGBTQAS2+ community,” he added.
Nancy Caul and Nicholas Penney, Ormandy’s son, got the honor of raising the town's flags on the chilly Monday afternoon.
“I want everyone to know how loud and proud Jasper is as a whole, supporting and accepting everyone,” Ormandy said.
Although pouring rain, this did not stop the community from coming out and showing their support for the international day.
“Jasper has always been a safe haven for us locals,” added Ormandy, “and it warms my heart knowing how many people this little town attracts for our diversity, equality and overall acceptance.
“We can only hope, and keep working to spread the word of love and equality for all in the years to come.”
