As Christmas approaches, we have an opportunity to reflect on the successes of the past year, while looking forward to what lies ahead.
These past few months have been a juggling act, balancing constituency work and sessional duties, along with the various committees I serve on, but through it all I’ve been fortunate to be able to represent my constituents in West Yellowhead. Connecting with my communities is something I value the most about my position, and I am grateful to everyone who has given their time and energy to make that happen.
Through Alberta’s Recovery Plan, we’ve been able to not only recover the 340,000 jobs lost due to the pandemic, but also create an additional 105,400 jobs across our province. This is amazing news. These new jobs will bring new opportunities for people to provide for their families, build up the younger generations, and save for the future.
The government of Alberta has committed up to $150 million for rural broadband and was pleased recently when the federal government agreed to match these funds. With this investment more rural Albertans will be positioned to succeed on the online market.
With our sights focused on the future we are rapidly diversifying our economy while not turning away from what global demands require. Our clean natural resources are world-class, and this industry deserves a competitive place on the global market. Our programs have been promoting growth in hydrogen, petrochemicals, and rare earth minerals.
Furthermore, we’ve cut our deficit by a stunning $12.4 billion, which is one of the most dramatic improvements to provincial finances in Alberta history. The Alberta advantage is real, and right now there is so much potential for growth in our province.
Alberta is on a path to success, and I’m hopeful for the new year.
Right now, it’s my hope that everyone stays safe and warm for the holidays. I know I can’t wait to spend some time with my family making cookies and watching Christmas movies.
As always, it’s my pleasure to serve as your MLA.
Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas,
Martin Long
MLA for West Yellowhead; and
Parliamentary Secretary of Small Business and Tourism
