RCMP Sgt. Rick Bidaisee said Jasperites, for the most part, are following the rules.

No tickets have yet been handed out in Jasper for breaching public health orders.

Jasper RCMP received ‘two or three’ calls over the weekend about people socializing in groups outdoors but none resulted in charges.

Sergeant Rick Bidaisee, commander of the Jasper detachment, said the RCMP is in its education phase and people he and his officers have talked to have been civil and respectful. In some cases, they were already physically distanced when the cops arrived.

“Jasperites, for the most part, are complying with requirements,” said Bidaisee.

Municipality of Jasper peace officers have not issued any tickets for large gatherings or other breaches of public health orders.

And Parks Canada has not issued any tickets for illegal camping or anything that could be deemed ‘COVID-related’.

However, Bidaisee said the RCMP have noticed a lapse in road safety with drivers speeding and ignoring traffic signage.

“We would like to remind the public that with the current situation families are taking this time to be out and about with their kids and there is no reason to speed,” said Bidaisee.

“Motorists should be taking even that much more care and attention. We don’t want anyone to get hurt.”

And police talked to two groups of people who were not from Jasper who had stopped in the park over the weekend. Bidaisee said they were civil and respectful when asked by police to leave and come back another time.
