Marmot Basin is closing for the season.
The Jasper ski hill announced today (Tuesday, March 17) that it will suspend operations.
"Our priority has always been the health and safety of our guests and employees," said a statement from Marmot.
"In light of the latest directives that people should self-isolate, we have made the difficult decision to suspend our operations for the remainder of the season."
Marmot Basin, which was scheduled to remain open until May 5, has followed the trend of many ski hills in western Canada.
Whistler, Big White, Sun Peaks, Kicking Horse, Fernie, Kimberley and Nakiska are among other ski hills that have closed.
Marmot's closure is effective from 5 p.m. today.
"We want to thank each and every guest, employee and volunteers that have been part of Marmot Basin this season and look forward to welcoming you back in the fall," said Marmot.
Marathon postponed
The Jasper Canadian Rockies Half Marathon has been postponed.
Organizers announced today (Tuesday, March 17) that the April 18 date has been cancelled after lengthy discussions with partners.
"This was a decision not taken lightly as it directly impacts everyone - your health, your race goals, the local economy, and everyone's chance to enjoy Jasper National Park," said race director Trevor Soll.
Soll said he could not yet guarantee a date for the event later this year until the government has determined the best course of action for large gatherings.
"I know you have been training well and were looking forward to a great time at our fifth annual event," said Soll. "Thanks for the patience and understanding."
