A Calgary man has been arrested for a hit-and-run that killed one and sent another to the hospital just east of Lake Louise on Highway 1.
On Aug. 5, a couple from Ontario had parked their vehicle at a rest area and were taking photographs when a westbound pick-up truck struck them on the shoulder of the roadway.
The 39-year-old male from Ontario suffered severe injuries. EMS and STARS arrived on scene and attempted to resuscitate the male victim, but he succumbed to his injuries and died on scene.
The female was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
The truck involved had not stopped and nearby detachments were notified.
Just before 11:00 a.m., Golden RCMP found the vehicle involved in the collision and after further investigation arrested the driver.
Rhowel Esperanza, 45, of Calgary has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to stop after an accident resulting in death and failing to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm.
The judicial process is underway to have Esperanza brought back to Alberta to face these charges.
The RCMP collision analyst attended the scene. The RCMP’s Criminal Collision Investigation Team are assisting with the investigation.
