Kevin Lazzari | Special to the Fitzhugh
Once in a while a movie will exceed my expectations.
The trailer made the movie look like it would be a visual bonanza but much to my surprise the preview did not even do Ready Player One justice.
With a production value of $175 million the makers created a film that resembled a top tier game. The movie blends reality and fantasy which is usually difficult for this specific genre. The imagination of the writers makes for a film that sci-fi fans will want to view a few times.
The intricate details of the movie have the viewer trapped in the 80s. There are multiple references to one of my favourite periods in movie history. For example, I spotted the Back To The Future DeLorean in the first ten minutes of watching the movie and then the 80s references progressed from there.
Without elaborating too much on each and every easter egg of pop culture my personal favourite was the honourable mention to The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai. The soundtrack is like a mixed tape that one of my friends would have made to cruise around to due the Patricia Street loop.
Each and every character is developed like it would be if you were playing a video game. I have always wished there would be a sequel but two years have passed and I have not heard any buzz.
Maybe I should start a Kickstarter campaign and get the ball rolling. For the present I am content rewatching this top 10 sci-fi.
