Once in a while, I will watch stand-up comedy when I need a laugh. I cruised through Netflix’s catalog and found a comedian that caught my eye. Ali Wong seemed like a good choice, and I watched one of her routines. Her comedy is raunchy and is probably more than I bargained for. My friend Kirby Morrow was a comic, and he told me that it was the hardest thing he had ever done in his life. He chose acting over being a comedian, and I think he made the right career choice.
Ali Wong is another comic that is choosing to be an actor. I thought I would check out her movie, “Always Be My Maybe.” It is a comedy that she wrote with Randall Park, with them being the stars of the film. They dialed back the comedy that would be associated with a stand-up routine. There still is subtle humor that is easily missed if you are not paying attention. Randall Park is the straight man in a comedic sense, and he does it well opposite Ali Wong’s raw character. Randall is the yang to Wong’s yin, and it plays perfectly to the script that they collaborated on.
I was pleasantly surprised by the movie, because I thought it would be raunchy based on Ali Wong’s stand-up routine. She made the right choice by giving audiences a PG version. If romantic comedies are your thing and you need a laugh, look no further.
