Jasper grad bottle drive this Saturday

The beginnings of something great are piled in Keith McKenney’s backyard. Jasper soon-to-be-grads like Thomas, the fourth of McKenney’s children to finish school here, will be out on their annual bottle drive Saturday, Jan. 5 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The bottle kids are coming.

Lucky for us this is a national park in Alberta, not a fictional trailer park in Nova Scotia.

Jasper Junior/Senior High School students will be out in force Saturday Jan. 5 as they cobble together some coin to offset the cost of their grad dinner held at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge later this year.

“We already have a lot of businesses we’ve called that will be donating,” bottle drive coordinator Keith McKenney said Wednesday. “If I have enough students helping, I’ll have a map of the town and they’ll canvass door-to-door.”

The leaders of tomorrow will be out between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

McKenney said the JPL grad dinner is a beloved tradition, and who could argue with him?

“Family members and students meet out there and have a really nice dinner in the main dining room. There are speeches, too, students will get up and talk about their year. It’s pretty informal, but they all get dressed up and it’s a big deal for parents, to see their child graduating.”
