A fundraiser has been launched in memory of the man who died at Annette Lake on Heritage Day.
Hugo Escobedo Sr., from Edmonton, drowned on August 3 while on a trip to Jasper with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Maribelle, and son Hugo.
Escobedo was described as “an exceptional person”, by Pamela Higueros, who set up a GoFundMe to help his family with memorial costs.
She said he was “a loving father and husband, a person that was always willing to help his friends and family”.
The fundraising page says Escobedo came to Canada with his young family from Mexico looking for a better life. He had started his own business with his brother and lived to see his son graduate high school with honours just this year.
“We can’t put into words how saddened the community is by this immense loss,” wrote Higueros. “So many people have been positively impacted by Hugo’s contagious positivity, always so happy, and loving.”
Higueros said the fundraiser has been set up for Escobedo’s family, to help with funeral costs and living expenses as Escobedo was the breadwinner for the family.
“We hope that the people reading this will be willing to help us raise enough money to help at least financially to lessen the impact that always comes with these unfortunate situation,” she said.
