When it rains, it pours.
So it did at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s golf course as 156 duffers set out to raise some money for Jasper Victim Services at its annual fundraiser on Sept. 8.
Coordinator Paul Schmidt said his team had the umbrellas out during the deluge for just four holes but the real downpour was a windfall as the event raised close to $30,000, about $5,000 more than years past.
The silent auction and live auction, auctioneered by Doug McPhee, returning to the microphone years after presiding over the inaugural JVS fundraising sell-off, raised about $9,200.
“Fairmont really went all out for us,” Schmidt said. “They had quite a few stays at their properties in the auction, with skiing, or golf, and they came to the table with some extra items that we tried to get the maximum value for.”
As always there were a number of fun challenges out on the course, including the roll-the-dice-and-use-that-club, which brought in about $500. No word on how much was made on paid mulligans this year.
Plus food. Lots of food, on the course and at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre, where the gala dinner was held for about 190 people.
“Even though it’s a six-hour round instead of four, it goes by pretty quick because it’s all pretty fun.”
