Fuchsia Dragon | special to the Fitzhugh

Families and friends gathered together in frosty Robson Park on Friday night for the lighting of Jasper’s World Tree.

Decorations crafted by Jasperites were hung in the tree while carollers sung and fingers were kept warm by the campfire.

The crowd gathered all around the tree and hung decorations while singing.

And as Jingle Bells hit the chorus, the 25-foot tree lit up to gasps.

The World Tree has been placed for the community and will serve as a hub for winter and Christmas festivities.

The lighting ceremony began with a lantern walk from the Alpine Senior Centre to in front of the library, where the World Tree stands.

The park was decorated with lights and wreaths, and Santa’s Anonymous sold hot chocolate and hot apple cider to the chilly crowd.

Town councillor Jenna McGrath gave a welcome message.

She said: “I hope you have your woollies on!

“We are gathered here together this evening to recognise and enter this festive season in our beautiful home.

“This tree signifies cultures from around the world. We may be away from our loved ones or not have a tree at home, but the World Tree will serve as a hub, representing community and cultural diversity.”

The tree is decorated with 500 lights and 40 decorations – plus handmade community contributions.

Anyone is welcome to add ornaments to the World Tree at any time. They should be weather friendly and not food based, and they will be dispersed higher on the tree at a later date.

The World Tree is “for all to share”,  and the community volunteers behind the event thank the fire department, the library, Municipality of Jasper, Jasper National Park, Community Outreach Services and Jasper Park Lodge.

Other festive events in Jasper this week include the Jasper United Church Christmas tea, bake sale and bazaar today (December 13) at the McCready Centre at 7 p.m., and CoCo’s Christmas Craft Fair at Coco’s on Sunday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Community Christmas Party takes place on Friday, Dec. 21 at the Activity Centre. Advance tickets are required.
