Children of Jasper were united on Friday for a day of fun in the sun - and snow.

It was the annual Ecole Desrochers carnivale, and music blared as students from both elementary and French schools played and competed in activities in Centennial Park.

They raced in sacks in knee-deep snow, kicked and pushed a giant soccer ball around, and played with sleds and long skis.

Camille Aubin, an assistant at Ecole Desrochers who organised the event, said: “It’s for them to be outside, speak French, and give the opportunity for both schools to meet and talk.

“We do some events like this to be together a little bit more.”

The kids had eight minutes on each activity before switching.

Other games were hockey, tug-o-war, and tag - and one station kept fingers warm with hot chocolates.

Aubin said the event is usually held at the end of February, but they decided to hold the carnivale a few weeks later this year as part of the Francophonie Month activities.

Every year, the Month of the Francophonie is celebrated in March in Alberta to promote the French language, celebrate cultural diversity and bring together people, groups and communities interested in the Francophonie.
