Jasper Habitat for the Arts has partnered with the Jasper Legion to offer a community makerspace, where artists of all stripes can drop in on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to work on their latest creations or learn to make something new.
A makerspace, according to Habitat's Marianne Garrah, is "a community oriented space where people with common interests can come and create."
The Habitat CreArtive Afternoons will be located in the Legion building—where Ecole Desrochers used to be. The Geikie Street doors will open for the first time Tuesday, July 7 for an open house hosted by Ann Hoffele, one of Jasper's many creative minds. At the open house, community members are welcome to put their mark on a mural that will adorn the walls of the brand new creative space.
Following Tuesday's open house, the space will be open every Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the summer from 1 to 5 p.m.
The drop-in fee is $10 and includes access to all kinds of craft materials, as well as some instruction. Hoffele will be there with a few different projects in mind each week, ensuring there is something fun to create, no matter your age.
She said the theme for the summer will be outerspace, so there will be opportunities to create rockets, planes and spaceships, as well as many other fun projects. (She even has a cardboard R2D2 hanging around.)
The makerspace will be broken into two halves: on one side is the "fun shop" where artists can rent out the space for an hour or two to teach a workshop or art class, while the other side is the "makerspace" where there will be an opportunity for people of all ages to make crafts.
Hoffele encourages parents to bring their kids and to stick around for some cutting and pasting.
"I'd like to see parents come and hang out with their kids for the afternoon."
"Remember," said Garrah, "there is no age limit to creativity!"
