Lesleigh Campbell - Special to the Fitzhugh
The Ponoka Stampeders charged into town this past Sunday looking for retribution against the PeeWee Bears.
Earlier this season, the Bears made the long trip to Ponoka, only to beat them in their own barn. Now Jasper was being challenged to defend their upper hand, right here at home.
Challenge accepted.
Just over one minute into the game, Drew Kovacs received a pass from Carson Campbell and buried it in the back of the Stampeders' net.
That goal was answered a few minutes later by Ponoka, who tied it up and left it that way for the rest of the first.
The second period got off to a great start for Jasper when Georgia Bell sniped one past the Ponoka netminder, Kovacs getting the helper.
However, the lead was short lived when the Stampeders scored two quick power play goals and then two more goals to add insult to injury.
Not giving up that easily, Carson Campbell scored one more for Jasper just as the period was coming to an end.
Entering the third period down 5 to 3, Jasper still had a fighting chance.
With both goalies playing like brick walls, there was no change in the score until halfway into the period.
At which point, Seth Johannesson passed the puck up to Drew Kovacs who slid it across to Carson Campbell, finding the back of the net.
With the score 5 to 4 you could feel the pressure intensify on both benches.
As time was running out, Jasper pulled their goalie for the extra skater.
But despite solid pressure, they were unable to even the score, leaving the final score 5 to 4 for the visiting team.
Due to excellent hustle throughout the game, Joshua Doyle was named The Real Deal.
This wraps up the PeeWee Bears' regular season and playoffs begin next week against Devon. Go Bears!
