The Municipality of Jasper confirmed today (Oct. 16) that an attendee of the Out of School Care program has tested positive for COVID-19.

A new case of COVID-19 has been confirmed today (Oct. 16) at Jasper Out of School Care program.

This case is one of two new diagnoses of the virus reported in the municipality today, bringing the active case count in Jasper to five.

The Municipality of Jasper confirmed the Out of School Care case in a letter to staff today, noting that parents and guardians of children in the program had already been notified and that anyone deemed a close contact would be notified by Alberta Health Services.

There is currently no indication that transmission began at the program, which caters for school-age children from Kindergarten up to Grade 6, states the letter, signed by Jasper’s chief administrative officer, Mark Fercho.

Fercho added that users of the program were using a dedicated entrance to the curling lounge, meaning Activity Centre staff and patrons are not considered to be at risk in relation to this case.

“Safety, as always, is our first priority," he said.

"Out of an abundance of caution, all parents have been notified of the situation and the Out of School Care program will be closed today to allow for contact tracing to occur and to perform additional cleaning.”

This is the fourth day in a row that new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Jasper. Before Oct. 13, there had been no new cases had reported since Aug. 19.

On Oct. 13, a case was confirmed at Jasper Junior/Senior High School. Some students are now in self-isolation and a deep clean of the school has been undertaken.

Two further cases were confirmed on Oct. 14 and Oct. 15 in the municipality.

For these two cases, and one reported today, there is no further information at this time. For confidentiality reasons, Alberta Health does not provide any information about patients, including if the case is from a known exposure or community spread.
