Monika Schaefer was sentenced to 10 months incarceration for incitement to hatred in Germany this week.
Her brother, Alfred, was sentenced to three years and two months, according to B’nai Brith, which “provided detailed intelligence reports to German officials, leading to their eventual arrests.”
For Monika, a resident of Jasper, Alberta who was arrested outside another hate crime trial in Munich in January, the sentence amounts to time served.
“We commend the German justice system for effectively dealing with a blatant manifestation of antisemitism,” said Michael Mostyn, Chief Executive Officer of B’nai Brith Canada. “Holocaust denial is once again on the rise, but this important court decision should help deter others from engaging in racist and hateful rhetoric."
