During the months of May and June, local youth took part in the minor soccer program once again.
Put on by Jasper Minor Sports, the minor soccer program caters to youth between the ages of four all the way to 18.
The teams play at both Commemoration Park and Centennial Field on Monday through Thursday evenings.
From the coaches to the managers, even the organizing committee, the minor sports soccer program is run entirely by volunteers.
Even with COVID restrictions in place, the kids still got to enjoy their soccer season, just with some minor adjustments to keep everybody safe.
The program had to make sure there was a smaller player to coach ratio, ensure the kids were distancing during their practice.
With all restrictions in place, the program did have to cut their season short this year.
During the current shorter season, the soccer program focused on drills, fitness, individual skills and just simply being able to have fun outside with friends.
On June 10, the government had put the province into phase two, and with some restrictions lifted, the kids were able to enjoy the opportunity to scrimmage during their practices.
With the government’s plan to be reopen this summer, the minor soccer program is looking forward to having a regular season next year.
“We are very much looking forward to a longer season and resuming league play next year,” said Janice Branch, co-director of the program.
