It's alleged a Jasper man walked out of court and right back into the life last month.
John Jim Kontos pleaded guilty to possession for the purpose of trafficking in court in Edmonton on Feb. 23 of this year. He was sentenced to two years less a day to be served at home and was placed on conditions that in similar cases have included keeping the peace and being of good behaviour, and abstaining from drugs or alcohol.
Jasper RCMP officers visited his residence on Feb. 27 and formed grounds to believe he was violating his conditions. Police officers periodically check on individuals on conditional sentences, sometimes referred to as house arrest, to ensure they are complying. In Alberta, that's included in what the RCMP calls the Crime Reduction Strategy, intended to identify repeat offenders, provide targeted enforcement and "address the root cause of a crime."
"Jasper RCMP officers actively participate to this dynamic, provincially coordinated crime reduction program and will continue to ensure that repeat offenders are brought before the court to be held accountable," Const. Patrick Vallee wrote in a press release.
Kontos was arrested on March 6 for failing to comply with his conditional sentence order and released. He is scheduled to appear in Hinton court on April 9.
The fail to comply charge against him has not been proven in court.
