The grey-clad Wolfpak of Hinton rolled into Jasper like the stormclouds that decided to join the forest fire smoke overhead for the return of football in the mountain town on Sept. 8.
So under sundry skies did the new-look Glaciers mount the field for what would be a bruising but valuable 19-0 learning experience.
As we reported last week, nine of the team’s 13 members discovered football at their first practice last Monday.
“I was very happy with my team even though we did not top the scoreboard,” coach Chuck MacKinnon said via email earlier this week. “We were simply just not quite as practised as them and the weather hurt our running game.”
The team also lost a critical third-down measure late and dropped a pair of touchdown opportunities.
“On the positive front Liam MacKinnon and Matthew Park had amazing games and were all over both sides of the field,” MacKinnon said. “All players hit the field for some game time so that was fun.”
MacKinnon is still having fun as bench boss but he’s looking for one or two good coaches to take over.
“This is my last year so ideally the next coach could help out this season,” MacKinnon said. “I need at least one helper because the new guys do not get the training they need with only one coach and that’s critical.”
A trainer for the team to help with injuries wouldn’t hurt, either.
