Tragedy struck Jasper over the weekend, as an 11-year-old girl died after falling into the Maligne River.

On Sunday, Sept. 20, at about 12:30 p.m., Jasper RCMP, Parks Canada Visitor Safety and Emergency Medical Services responded to the call.

The girl had fallen into the water at the Fifth Bridge of Maligne Canyon in Jasper National Park. Bystanders at the scene were already trying to help her out of the water.

The young girl was rescued from the water near Sixth Bridge and medical first aid was provided. She was transported to hospital, where she later died.

The investigation into the incident continues with the assistance of the Edmonton Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
