Edmonton's PCL wins Jasper National Park Whistlers rebuild contract

Edmonton-based PCL Limited will be rebuilding Whistlers Campground, Parks Canada announced Thursday. The $48.

Edmonton-based PCL Limited will be rebuilding Whistlers Campground, Parks Canada announced Thursday.

The $48.7 million contract represents one of the “most significant investments in visitor facilities in Jasper National Park in the past 50 years,” according to a press release. “Parks Canada will work with PCL to finalize the construction schedule and will share updates as more information becomes available.”

The release issued Thursday afternoon pointed out the removal of dead and dying trees last winter was an important step toward preparing the site for construction.

“The public tendering process by Public Services and Procurement Canada was completed on June 21, 2019 when PCL Limited was awarded the contract,” Parks said. “The campground’s construction contract value was determined through a competitive public tender, and the lowest bid from qualified vendors was accepted.”

The Jasper Park Chamber of Commerce had voiced concerns about the impact the campground’s closure was having on businesses in town and had their board leadership meet with Parks officials Thursday morning. They got the good news then.

“We’re very happy to hear this announcement has been made and we’re looking forward to see the new-look campground,” Jasper Park Chamber of Commerce general manager Pattie Pavlov said later in the day.

“Parks Canada appreciates the patience of the campers and shop and business owners in Jasper as this project is implemented,” the announcement continued. “The improvements being made at Whistlers will contribute to improved visitor experiences for thousands of visitors for many years to come.”

The awarding of the contract to rebuild Jasper National Park’s largest campground award comes after four years of planning and preparation.

Built in the 1960s, the 781-campsite complex once reopened will feature a new registration building, 17 new combined shower and washroom buildings spread throughout the campground, improved campsites and wider roads, not to mention upgraded water and wastewater and electrical systems. “Many” campsites with hydro service will be upgraded to 50 amp.

More than 1,000 other front-country campsites in 10 campgrounds continue to be available for the camping season in JNP.

There are 15 other campgrounds within a close proximity to Jasper National Park that offer a range of camping experiences.“To ensure the best possible experience, visitors are encouraged to plan their visit ahead of time through the Parks Canada’s website or download the Parks Canada’s app to make a reservation before coming to Jasper National Park. Reservations can be made at reservation.parkscanada.gc.ca.”
