Coldest days on record as EXTREME COLD hits Jasper

Jasper is under an Extreme Cold Warning and two days this month have been the coldest recorded by Environment Canada.

Yesterday, January 13, hit -40.8 degrees celsius, the lowest temperature since at least 1995, when Environment Canada registers from.

And this morning at 9 a.m. it was -44.8 degrees celsius in Jasper with a wind chill of -52C. The previous coldest January 14 was in 2005 at -35.7C.

The coldest temperature ever recorded in Jasper was −47.2C (−53F) on January 24, 1916.

Today will be mainly sunny with a wind of up to 15 kilometres per hour. The high will be -29C with a windchill of -52C this morning and -34C this afternoon.

Environment Canada warned that frostbite can set in in minutes today.

Tonight there will be a few clouds with a low of -35C and a windchill of near -40C.

Tomorrow, Wednesday January 15, will see a mix of sun and cloud, becoming cloudy in the afternoon with a 30 per cent chance of flurries in the late afternoon.

The high tomorrow will be -27C with a wind chill of -41C in the morning and -32C in the afternoon - with another warning of frostbite in minutes.

Overnight will see periods of snow and a low of minus 34.

On Thursday, January 16, there will be a mix of sun and cloud with a high of -27C. Overnight will be cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of flurries and a high of -20C.

On Friday, January 17, there will be a mix of sun and cloud with 60 per cent chance of flurries and a high of -20C. Overnight cloudiness will increase and the low will be -23C.

Saturday, January 18, will be cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of flurries and a high of -20C. Overnight will be cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of flurries and a low of -17C.

Sunday will be cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of flurries and a high of -2C, and overnight will be cloudy with a low of -10C.
