Vermiculite insulation inside cinder block walls and asbestos containing flooring will be removed from the Jasper Arena this month, according to the town.
”This initiative is part of an ongoing effort with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety to ensure municipal facilities follow best practices in asbestos mitigation and management,” recreation director Yvonne McNabb said in a press release. “The removal work will take place this summer and will extend the seasonal closure of the arena, affecting existing bookings for the month of August.”
Sports camps have been cancelled and organizers have been notified. Updates on timelines will be provided as work progresses.
In December, the province launched the Ice Rink Initiative of Alberta, where Occupational Health and Safety officers inspected arenas across the province.
“During the following months, municipal staff worked diligently with provincial representatives to ensure compliance and minimize risks to workers and members of the public. The upcoming removal work follows asbestos management best practices and is the result of provincial inspections and directives. The Municipality of Jasper is committed to ensuring high standards of health and safety for community members and visitors.”
