PHOTOS: Jasper residents enter park weeks after evacuating

Jasper residents got their first glimpse of home as they stopped at the east gates of Jasper National Park on Friday (Aug. 16).

Jasper residents are returning to the townsite, with the caveat that they will be greeted by only critical retail (gas stations, grocery stores, pharmacies) and limited social services and utility availability.

Residents are to be provided with placards they can place near the address numbers on their home to alert ATCO that they need their gas reignited, if that’s possible.

“If your home is listed as green on our Damaged Properties Map and is located in the damaged areas (red zones), you may be wondering why utilities like water, gas, or power might not be available even if your property wasn’t as severely affected as others,” a Municipality of Jasper Facebook post read. “Unfortunately, due to the extent of the damage in these zones, utilities may have been impacted, and repairs will take time. If your home is green inside a red zone, we cannot guarantee utilities will be fully operational until you test them yourself.

“We appreciate your patience, and please know that utility crews are working as quickly as possible to restore services.”

A Re-Entry Guide for residents is available on the town’s website.
