Word from the Library: The favorite time of year is here

Where I come from, the time between Dec. 1 and Christmas is called the Quiet Time. People are meant to slow down their daily routines, contemplate all the good things in their lives and gain a new appreciation for them.

Where I come from, the time between Dec. 1 and Christmas is called the Quiet Time.

People are meant to slow down their daily routines, contemplate all the good things in their lives and gain a new appreciation for them.

That is a beautiful concept; however, when I look at my calendar in December, it is full of events, Christmas parties and get-togethers.  It seems we use the time in December to enjoy and celebrate our community of family and friends and the people who provide the tapestry of our work and playtime. A different but also good way to spend this month, I would suggest.

So, let me add a few more events to your calendar which will brighten your December: From Dec. 5 to Dec. 16 bring a bag and $5 and fill it with as many items you would like from our Book Sale shelf. It displays many used children books, adult non-fiction and fiction books and DVDs. Maybe you will find a gem for one of your loved one for under the Christmas Tree.

On Dec. 12-16, we invite you to bring one or more cuttings from your houseplant/s and exchange it with new (donated) cuttings, hopefully ones you always were interested to add to your home jungle.  On Wednesday Dec. 13, we will host a movie night together with COS. The title of the movie is “The Night Before,” a 2015 film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie. It starts at 6:30 p.m. Popcorn will be provided.

The very next day, we will cater to the “big kids,” all children who enjoy a story being read to them in an Evening Story Time with Christmas Carols and ornament crafts.  Let’s cozy up with a cup of hot chocolate and festive Christmas stories in the children section at 6:30 p.m.

Not to leave our seniors out cold! Twice in December we will meet in the Reading Room at 1:30 p.m. on a Thursday (Dec. 7 and 21) for our “From the stacks” book reading program for adults and seniors. Our volunteer readers will take you with their read-out stories, poems and even songs to far away places and time. Join us and enjoy warm beverages and a treat, salty or sweet.

If you have not heard yet: Knit happens! The knitting group is meeting every Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the Reading Room. Apart from the good company, this group can also help you untangling all your knitting/crocheting problems. And talking about clearing up jumbles: on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 6:30 p.m., the Writing Promptly group is having another session here at the library. Habitat for the Arts and the library are co-hosting this event to connect budding and senior writers in our town to activate creative juices.

We are open on Dec. 28, 29, and 30 but closed on Dec. 24, 25, 26, 27 and 31 as well as January 1 and 2.  Come and enjoy the holidays and our community here in the library.
