Sylvie Pinard’s journey began in the vibrant city of Montreal, where her artistic impulses first took shape. As a child, she was captivated by the wonders of the natural world, translating her admiration into charcoal drawings, oil paintings, and intricate mosaic creations. The interplay of colours, shapes, and textures in nature ignited her passion, fostering a deep appreciation for their unique relationships.
In her early twenties, Sylvie embarked on a new path—setting aside her paintbrushes to pursue a rigorous academic career in geology. She immersed herself in the study of rocks, earning a Ph.D. with a specialization in micropaleontology. During her time working as a geologist in Nunavut and Alberta, she honed her skills in dating rocks through the examination of microfossils. It was in this scientific exploration that Sylvie made a profound realization: the study of geology and fossils encapsulates a moment in time, akin to how a painting captures a glimpse of either the natural world or the realm of imagination.
In 2002, Sylvie rekindled her artistic passion, once again picking up her brushes and paints. She came to understand that her experiences as a geologist had uniquely informed her artistic perspective, revealing the beautiful connections between art and science. This newfound synthesis enriched her work, creating a harmonious balance that is evident in her paintings.
When visiting Sylvie, audience members are often drawn in by her enthusiasm as she shares her philosophy on art. Each piece or series she creates acts as a time capsule—encapsulating her exploration of the world while emphasizing the journey as much as the destination. Rather than adhering to a strict formula, Sylvie allows her subjects and mediums to guide her, leading to an evolving illustration of her vision and understanding of the world around her. This dynamic process brings her back to the fundamental elements that first inspired her: shapes, colours, and textures.
Currently, Sylvie is the featured artist at the Jasper Art Gallery, showcasing her work in progress from Monday, June 2, through Saturday, June 14. This exhibition, titled “What is Next?”, focuses on circles and the creative process. It features an inspiring selection of her geode paintings and 3D planets, all part of her ongoing “Rock Stars” project. Each piece stands as a testament to her dual love for science and art, inviting viewers to explore the story within every circle, merges creativity with the wonders of the universe.
