Students at Jasper Junior/Senior High School took a break from classes to launch water balloons at their teachers, May 19, in an effort to raise funds for Nepal.
Sitting in a line of chairs on the soccer field, teachers bravely faced their students who purchased water balloons for a dollar apiece earlier in the week.
Together the students raised $185, which will be matched by student council and then matched again by the federal government.
“We try to get involved in big organizations and events that are happening in the world so we’ve been trying to do something once a month and obviously this was a perfect opportunity,” said Leslie Currie, a Grade 7 and 8 teacher, who works with the school’s student council.
The money will be given to the Red Cross, which has been coordinating a massive relief effort in Nepal, along with other charities and foreign governments, since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake first struck the country on April 25.
The deathtoll has now surpassed 8,500 people and destroyed more than half a million homes. A second major quake struck on May 12, making it the deadliest natural disaster in the country’s history.
“We were just trying to think of a fun way to bring light to the situation,” said student council president Kiana Boisvert.
“Everyone was really keen to help and I think everyone knows a lot more about Nepal now.”
