Local poker stars gathered together, March 21, to try their luck in the Jasper Victim Services Unit’s Texas Hold’em tournament.
Aaron Homan was the evening’s big winner, taking home a few hundred dollars in VISA gift cards.
The event, which takes place each March and November, is a fundraiser for the JVSU and welcomes people of all skill levels, whether they’re seasoned card slingers or fresh-faced newcomers.
The funds raised during the tournament go directly to victims of crime or trauma in Jasper National Park. Through the JVSU, Paul Schmidt—the unit’s coordinator—and volunteer advocates offer informal emotional support and assistance, secure temporary housing and transportation, make referrals to appropriate agencies and organizations and help with court preparation.
As well as being a fundraiser, the poker tournament is a way for the JVSU to keep itself in the forefront of people’s minds. That way, if someone is a victim in the future, they know there are supports available to them in the community, and they also know who to call.
Following the tournament, Schmidt said, “Jasper Victim Services appreciates the opportunity to host this fun fundraiser, and thanks all those who came out to play.”
He also noted that if there are any other organizations in town that would like to host a poker tournament, the JVSU has chips that it is happy to rent out for a small fee.
Anyone interested can contact Schmidt at 780-852-2275.
