Think you have what it takes to foster a tree seedling this winter?
If your answer is yes, the Jasper Sustainability Club for Youth would like to challenge you to a tree growing contest.
On Dec. 10, members of the club will be at the Jasper Junior/Senior High School from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. selling 200 pre-potted seedlings for $10 each to raise funds for the SEED classroom it hopes to bring to town.
Once the seedlings have been purchased, there are no rules; green thumbs can do whatever they like to foster their trees—fertilize them, sing to them, you name it!—and then on May 27, they're asked to return to the school so their trees can be measured.
The tallest tree on that day will receive a yet to-be-determined prize. Then everyone will be invited to plant the seedlings south of Hinton.
“Yellowhead County has organized this for us,” said Chad Krayenhoff, the teacher responsible for the sustainability club. “It's 33 km south of Hinton. It's a cleared area that's never been replanted, so it could use it.”
The contest is open to the entire community.
