Dear Editor,

After living in Jasper for 36 years—16 years as a guide/bus driver—I have some suggestions for a safer and  more enjoyable drive on one of Canada’s most iconic drives, the Icefields Parkway or Highway 93, that connects Jasper to Lake Louise.

  • A greater police presence seven days a week between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. from May to September.
  • Rumble strips before pull-outs, including both sides of Bow Summit and at the Tangle Creek Waterfall and the Goat Lick area, to slow oncoming drivers.
  • More wardens to better monitor wildlife jams.
  • Courtesy signs at entrances to the highway to prevent long lines behind slow moving vehicles.
  • Signs to remind people that there is no cell coverage and to show where payphones are located.
  • Better signage at the entrance of Upper Peyto Lake parking lot, the South Columbia Icefield parking area and the Medicine Lake parking area to tell drivers where cars and RVs can park.
  • There are clear places for buses to park and these parking spots should have BUS ONLY PARKING printed on the parking stall.
  • A parking attendant at the Columbia Icefield entrance is also a must.

These are just a few ideas that could help keep people safe while travelling the highway.
