Under Jasper's expansive night skies, Oct. 18, celestial music will ring out into the natural amphitheatre of our landscape.
Symphony Under the Stars will bring 22 musicians from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra Strings to the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge to perform an outdoor concert like no other.
“This is the first time we're doing this type of concert,” said Michael Schurek, director of community relations for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. “The only time we do outdoor performances is for Symphony Under the Sky on Labour Day long weekend.
“It will be very special to be able to experience music under the stars and with the atmosphere of being at the Jasper Park Lodge, with the mountains.”
The performance is a part of the Jasper Dark Sky Festival, which kicks off Oct. 17.
Schurek said the musicians are thrilled to be a part of the festival and to have the opportunity to perform this once in a lifetime concert.
“We haven't gone as far west as Jasper in probably 20 years—people are very excited.”
But, of course, everything depends on the weather, so the musicians and the organizers are all waiting around with their fingers crossed until Saturday.
“We're always working against Mother Nature and really when it comes down to it, it's always just fingers crossed,” said Schurek, noting that there is an indoor backup plan in case the weather doesn't cooperate. “But there's nothing like hearing music outdoors, with the backdrop of the mountains.”
The performance begins at 8 p.m. and audience members are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets.
