A motorcycle crash on Maligne Road claimed the life of a Canadian Forces Sergeant June 16.

Sgt. Ginette Gauthier crashed her motorbike at approximately 8 p.m. Monday night near Medicine Lake, after she and other riders from the 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade decided to take in the scenery along Maligne Road.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but no other vehicles were involved. Captain Christine Salt, the public affairs officer for the 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade, said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Gauthier was staying at Snaring River Campground in Jasper, as part of a training exercise that was supposed to see the brigade ride from Edmonton to Jasper, and back.

Gauthier joined the army in 1982, and served in both Afghanistan and the Sinai Peninsula as a resource management clerk. She was also part of the Canadian Armed Forces' response to the flooding in Southern Alberta last year.

In a press release, Brigadier-General David Anderson said Gauthier was "a dedicated, hard-working soldier who loved to ride and whose vibrant presence will be missed within our headquarters."
