Students at Jasper Elementary got a taste of theatre Oct. 18 as a travelling group of singing super heroes and villains stopped by to educate them about natural gas and electricity.

The three-person show was a lively performance in which villains Rocket Socket and Carmen Monoxide tangled with hero “The Blue Flame,” in a musically charged mission to keep their electrical power.

Decked out in colourful costumes and armed with choreographed dance routines, the characters belted out songs warning the kids to stay safe around natural gas and electricity, dropping in safety tips with each dramatic hand gesture and high kick.

The performance ended with a faux game show that gave the students an opportunity to take the villains’ power by answering a series of safety questions. Clapping and giggling, the kids screeched answers to questions like “natural gas is odourless, true or false?” and “is it ok to stick a fork in a toaster?”

The show was put on by ATCO Energy, and company representative Bobbi Lambright said it’s designed to engage kids through theatre, teaching them how to be safe around natural gas and electricity.

“We believe live theatre is a particularly effective educational tool,” said Lambright. “We’re using the power of theatre to tell a story that is relevant to their world and provides important information.”

Jasper Elementary School Principal Raymond Blanchette-Dubé was excited to have the show in town, saying the performance was a “great way for us to end the week.”
