Jasper’s PeeWee Bears played a hard fought final game in their home tournament, May 24.

Facing off against a team from Camrose, the Bears were down by six runs in the third inning. But, despite their rocky start, they clawed their way back into the game, pulling it within one in the seventh.

The score was 16–15 for Camrose and Jasper already had two outs.

“It was pretty intense,” said coach Kathleen Buffel.

When the Bears’ batter walked up to home base, he had two runners on base, one on second and another on third, and on his first pitch he smashed the ball, hitting a beautiful line drive straight into the glove of Camrose’s second baseman.

That would mark the end of the game and earn the Bears a silver medal.

It was a close matchup between the two teams, with Camrose winning their other contest the previous day with a score of 18–16.

The Bears play their next tournament in Lacolme June 6–7.

Jasper has three competitive baseball teams: Mosquito, PeeWee and Bantam. This is the first year for the Bantam team and in 2014 the Mosquito team—made up of many of this year’s PeeWee players—won silver in the provincials.

The PeeWees will be heading to the 2015 provincial championships in July.
