Two of Jasper’s long-time Rotarians were recognized for their contributions to the humanitarian organization May 5.
Bob Dowling and Tom Walker were each named Paul Harris Fellows.
Paul Harris was the founder of the Rotary Foundation. To receive the distinction of fellow, a person must contribute upwards of $1,000 to the foundation, either in one lump sum or over the course of a number of years.
Jasper’s Rotary Club used the occasion to honour both men for not only their financial contributions to the foundation, but for their contributions to Jasper’s local club.
“Because of your ongoing support,” said Greg Van Tighem, “you’re making the world a better place for humanity—fighting AIDS, polio, malaria and other diseases, combating third world hunger, housing and education—locally and globally, the impact of your support is benefitting many.
“Thank you Tom and Bob, not only for your commitment to the Jasper Rotary Club and the community of Jasper, but for your contributions to the Rotary Foundation through the years.”
After receiving a medallion, Dowling said that there are many organizations that he has worked with over the years and Rotary is one that “I will be a part of as long as I live.”
The Paul Harris Fellow was first established in 1957 to show appreciation for substantial contributions made to—what was then the foundation’s only program—the Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study.
In 2006, the number of fellows reached one million.
Rotary’s main objective is service, both locally and globally. Jasper’s club has contributed to numerous causes over the years, including Tools for Schools in Rwanda and the Jasper Sustainability Club for Youth’s SEED project.
