Report theft and suspected criminal activity: police

From Dec. 1 to Jan. 21, only two files of theft were reported, but “police are aware that jackets have gone missing from the Atha-B and Whistle Stop,” he said,.“Whether they’re lost or stolen.”

Gardiner understands why missing jackets aren’t regularly reported to the detachment.

“Sometimes [people who lose their jackets] feel silly reporting to the police because they aren’t sure whether it’s lost or stolen because they were too drunk and don’t remember.” But, it’s encouraged to report a missing jacket or any other unaccounted for items sooner rather than later.

“It makes it a lot easier if they come to us first with the information,” said Gardiner,  because spreading it on social media can unintentionally alert thieves that someone is on to them, so they’ll get rid of the stolen property before authorities have a chance to investigate.

With this calibre of crime, police don’t have time or the man power to troll social media for complaints, which is why it’s important for the public to step forward with any information.

To prevent jacket loss or theft, don’t leave it unattended and remove valuables from the pockets. If a coat check service is offered, Gardiner strongly recommends taking advantage of that option.

“You never know who’s in [the establishment] or who might decide to take it.”
