Participants came to Lake Annette for the 10 km run from all over Alberta—Jasper, Hinton, Edson and Edmonton—but in the end the first place title went to Maarten Storm from the Netherlands.
Storm and his wife were in Jasper on vacation when they noticed a flyer for the race. “We both like running and this looked like fun so we thought why not,” Storm said. “I’ve never won a contest so this is really exciting for me.”
Storm finished the 10K in just over 38 minutes. Jasper’s Mike D’Antonio and Eric Low crossed the finish line just a few minutes after Storm.
“It’s so beautiful here—you just don’t get to run in the forest and nature in the Netherlands,” Storm said. “Everything is so flat at home so for me I found this course pretty hilly which was a little challenging at times.”
For the ladies, Lindsey Romano finished first with Monika Braun coming in quickly after her, followed by Jamie Hayward.
Victor Vassalo, one of the organizers of the race, said it was another successful year. “People seemed to enjoy themselves,” he said after the race. “We do this each year as a way to kick-off the running season. For a lot of people here this was their first race after winter.
“It’s a way to get the community together and have some fun. Some people get really competitive while others participate just to challenge themselves or have fun.”
