Brother-sister duo Caleb and Thea Catto won the Bear’s Paw Bakery’s inaugural recipe challenge with their pumpkin cupcakes, Dec. 18.
Caleb’s name was on the recipe, which was submitted to the bakery in November, but upon winning the challenge—and the $500 prize—he quickly admitted that the baking skills were his sister’s, not his own.
Thea said she had made the cupcakes for Thanksgiving and thought they were so good that she should enter them in the contest, but she also wanted to enter her “surprise cookies,” so she had Caleb put the cupcakes under his name.
When the top four recipes were selected to be in the challenge, the cupcakes were chosen, so Caleb and Thea made a deal that they would share the winnings, with Thea taking the bulk of the cash.
“I get two-thirds of the money,” she said while holding the cheque.
The recipe challenge was open to students from Grade 7 to Grade 12. Submissions were accepted until mid-November and then four recipes were selected to be featured at the Bear’s Paw Bakery and to be entered in a school-wide taste-off Dec. 16, where students tasted all four and voted on their favourites.
The votes were tallied by Kim Stark, owner of Bear’s Paw, and the winners were announced in the school gym, Dec. 18, after a rousing game of musical chairs.
In second place was Keandra Gruys’ lemon loaf. Aven Lodge’s blondies were a close third and in fourth was apple roses made by Liam, Skylar and Ryan.
Stark thanked the students for participating and assured them that she’ll be holding the recipe challenge again next year.
