The Jasper Aquatic Centre celebrated its 25th anniversary July 25, with a day-long schedule of events aimed at getting the community out to the centre to celebrate the milestone.

Things kicked off with a free aquafit class in the morning, and continued on with a poolside barbecue on the sun deck, where staff served up free burgers, cake and snacks.

The real fun began when the pool opened to the public, it was filled with fun, inflatable toys and gave kids the chance to have their faces painted. The pool was open most of the day, and the mediocre weather meant lots of families showed up for a swim.

Friday evening the pool still teamed with activity, as kids took running flips off of the diving board, and floated on giant inner tubes. Many ran around with intricately painted faces, and a few brave adults even lounged in the whirlpool.

Natasha Malenchak, the centre’s fitness and aquatic manager, said that at one point in the day there were so many people in the pool she had to bring in extra lifeguards to keep up. She estimated that attendance peaked at around 150 swimmers in the afternoon. Added to the more than 120 who came out to the barbecue, she said the day was an overall success.
