Pedalling through snow is a bit like pedalling through sand: you don’t get anywhere fast, but you certainly get a good workout.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, cyclists enjoyed just that, as they competed in the second annual Wintercross races at Centennial Park, taking their fat bikes around a hard-packed course spanning the entire field.

The event was organized by the Jasper Park Cycling Association, with help from Vicious Cycle, Freewheel Cycle and Source for Sports.

About a dozen cyclists came out to compete in the relay and solo races.

Taking the trophy for the most laps cycled by a team was Mike Langford and Matt Mackay of Hinton.

Derek Anderson took the title as the fastest soloist, completing six laps in 20 minutes.

As well as the races, the event also provided an opportunity for people to demo fat bikes from the town’s bike shops.

Wintercross picks up on the growing popularity of fat biking, with more and more bikes popping up on the valley’s trails.
